CONCEPT ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

Roadmap 100% sustainability by 2029

We believe that sustainability can only be implemented holistically, which is why we have drawn up an ambitious but realistic 10-point plan in 2019 that we will implement by 2029.

High value, sustainable work, ecological innovations and long-lasting products have always been a matter close to our hearts. “Nature’s best” is both the claim in breeding and the obligation to preserve our nature and actively support nature conservation. For us, this means that we do not stand still, but constantly develop further. Only in this way can we actively shape and promote a sustainable future.

GOAL 1

100% robust, disease-resistant varieties

In the organic trial field at our young plant nursery Janssen Group, all new varieties are tested under absolute organic conditions. In this way, we are already selecting plants that will prove themselves in a world without artificial crop protection, which is our goal by 2029.

Our current variety “Scarlet” has proven itself to be disease-resistant with strong luminosity and a shelf life of 16 weeks.

  • All insights flow directly back into our breeding.

GOAL 2 + 3

Long shelf life & winter hardiness

Year-round biodiversity

Sustainability not only means making our plants last longer, but also contributing to insect protection, especially when it comes to year-round biodiversity.

Our new varieties Erica carnea – Winterladies® and Daboecia cantabrica Bella Beauties® pursue exactly this goal and serve as a reliable food source for bees and other insects in winter and summer.

GOAL 4

Use of sustainable & peat-reduced substrates

A large number of Beauty-Ladies® producers work successfully with peat-reduced substrates between 30-70% and Gartenbau Elbers Florifair even uses 100% peat-free substrate.

  • This is an important contribution to climate and nature protection, because peatlands are valuable biotopes and even store significantly more CO2 than forests.

GOAL 5

Sustainable crop protection & fertilisation

Through targeted breeding of more disease-resistant varieties, we are preparing for a future without plant protection products. At the same time, we are testing organic fertilisers and pesticides in our organic trial field in order to be able to advise our producers on the choice and application of organic alternatives.

GOAL 6

100% sustainable packaging

Since 2020, all Beauty Ladies® are produced in 100% recycled pots and are fully recyclable. Some producers already use 100% plastic-free alternatives with the Pottburri® concept‼

Our young plants are produced in reusable plates, delivered and then refilled, thus ensuring packaging waste-free transport between young plant companies and producers.

GOAL 7

100% CO² Neutral

The heather plants come from Central Europe and required low heating costs during production. More than 60% of today’s Beauty Ladies® young plants do not need any heating costs, both in the cuttings stage and as finished products, which means enormous CO² savings compared to competing products.

More efficient internal and external logistics saves transport costs and is another way to save CO². In the future, CO² climate compensation for the low residual emissions is conceivable.

GOAL 8 + 9

Significantly reduce drain emissions to the environment

In addition to productions in closed systems where 100% water is reused, drain water has also been collected and reused on large open lava areas for several years.

This reuse enables groundwater and fertiliser savings of 30%‼ Our producer Dercks Gartenbau also uses impulse watering trolleys, which apply water to the plant with pinpoint accuracy, thus saving over 50% water and fertiliser.

GOAL 10

Fair compensation for employees & producers

Sustainability can only be implemented in the long term if the entire company is involved in this concept. Above all, fair remuneration for our employees and harmonious interaction with each other are important to us.

The economically successful cooperation of growers, young plant companies, gardeners and trade is also part of sustainable horticulture.

Only TOGETHER can we really live sustainability and successfully realise our goals in the future.
